Montero Mining is using AI to transform its exploration work in Chile. In conversation with Dr Tony Harwood, President and CEO, we explore how the company is leveraging technology to uncover hidden potential and deliver meaningful results.
Q: How is AI changing and improving Montero's exploration process?
A: AI is transforming how Montero identifies and evaluates exploration targets by enabling us to search and analyse large, complex datasets far faster and more accurately than before. It integrates geological, geochemical, and geophysical data to identify subtle patterns that may indicate mineralisation - patterns that could easily be overlooked through traditional analysis.
By combining AI-driven insights with on-the-ground geological expertise, we can focus our exploration on the most promising targets, optimise resource use, and reduce early-stage exploration risk.
Q: In what ways does your team collaborate with AI, and how does it complement their expertise?
A: Our team combines decades of geological field experience with a deep understanding of mineral systems and structural geology. AI doesn't replace that expertise, it enhances it.
Geologists define the parameters, interpret data outputs, and validate AI-generated models against real-world observations. This collaboration ensures that technology is guided by practical geological knowledge, producing results that are both scientifically sound and operationally meaningful.
Q: Has this technology significantly improved the speed, accuracy, or decision-making of your exploration drive in Chile?
A: Yes. AI has accelerated our data analysis and interpretation dramatically. Tasks that once took weeks can now be completed in hours. More importantly, the accuracy of target identification has improved, and AI helps us recognise connections between datasets that humans might miss or overlook.
This capability allows Montero to balance risk and opportunity more effectively, focusing exploration budgets on the highest-potential areas and enabling faster, more confident decision-making in the field.
Q: Montero recently acquired new exploration properties in Chile. How will AI shape your exploration strategy across the country's prime mining belts?
A: AI has already been pivotal to shaping our exploration strategy in Chile. In fact, it helped us identify and select the new projects we've recently acquired. Through research and the integration of geological, geochemical, and geophysical data, AI helped highlight areas with the strongest indicators of mineralisation and the highest potential for discovery.
As we advance our work across Chile's prime mining belts, AI continues to guide decision-making by refining geological models, prioritising targets, and optimising field programmes. This data-driven approach enables us to allocate exploration capital more effectively, focus on high-value opportunities, and accelerate the path from early-stage prospecting to potential discovery.
Q: Can you share an example where AI uncovered insights that traditional exploration methods might have missed?
A: At an early-stage project in Chile, AI-assisted modelling revealed geological and structural trends in geophysical and geochemical data, suggesting concealed mineralisation beneath the surface cover. These subtle patterns were missed by conventional interpretation methods.
The insights led us to define new, high-priority targets for follow-up exploration, demonstrating how AI can uncover hidden potential in a complex geological environment.
Thanks, Tony-it's always a pleasure. We look forward to more news from your boots-on-the ground team, which evidently leads in applying technology to exploration. Follow Montero Mining and Exploration on LinkedIn and @monteromining on X for the latest trends and insights in mineral exploration.
