Oneida County Prepares Next Generation Workforce with Artificial Intelligence TrainingView

Oneida County is continuing to prepare its future workforce by introducing Summer Youth Employment Program participants to one of the fastest-growing technologies shaping today's economy.

Approximately 80 participants in the Oneida County Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) completed an Artificial Intelligence Awareness course offered Aug. 3-6 through the Oneida County Office of Workforce Development in partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College. The pilot program provided students with a practical introduction to artificial intelligence and its growing impact on education, careers and everyday life.

"Preparing our young people for success means equipping them with the knowledge and skills they'll need in a rapidly changing workforce," said Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. "Artificial intelligence is transforming nearly every industry, and it is important that our Summer Youth Employment participants understand how to use it responsibly, recognize its limitations and embrace the opportunities it will create throughout their careers. This is another example of Oneida County investing in the workforce of tomorrow."

The four four-hour classes were taught by Franca Armstrong, MVCC's Executive Director of Apprenticeship Programs, and focused on helping participants become informed, responsible users of AI technology.

The curriculum explored both the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence, including the importance of using AI as a learning tool rather than a shortcut for completing schoolwork. Students also learned how to identify AI-generated misinformation, including fake videos and manipulated online content, while gaining a better understanding of how AI systems work and why critical thinking remains essential.

"Using AI the right way is going to be one of the make-or-break skills for our emerging workforce," said David Mathis, Director of the Oneida County Office of Workforce Development. "This pilot program gave our participants an introduction to technology that will become increasingly important throughout their careers while reinforcing the value of independent thinking and responsible decision-making."

Participants also explored practical applications for AI, including research, problem-solving and everyday tasks, while learning that effective use of AI depends on asking the right questions and carefully evaluating the information it provides.

The AI Awareness course was introduced as a pilot initiative as the Office of Workforce Development continues expanding opportunities that prepare Summer Youth Employment Program participants for success beyond their summer jobs. By combining real-world work experience with emerging technology education, Oneida County is helping ensure local youth are better prepared to meet the demands of an evolving workforce.
