Israel/Palestine: Statement by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union on the closure of the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge crossing 19:14 Israel/Palestine:[...]

The Israeli authorities' decision of 23 September to close the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge crossing for passenger access in both directions and for cargo traffic impacts freedom of movement between the West Bank and Jordan as well as the humanitarian response in Gaza. We have taken note of the announcement by the Director General of Crossings and Borders on the reopening of the crossing for persons as of 26 September and urge Israel to also allow cargo to cross. The Allenby/King Hussein Bridge crossing, as with other border crossings, should remain open for an effective humanitarian response. About one quarter of humanitarian relief items entering Gaza through the UN 2720 mechanism comes via Jordan.

This decision comes as Israel's ground offensive in Gaza City is seriously aggravating an already catastrophic and unsustainable humanitarian situation, resulting in appalling levels of civilian casualties and suffering. Medical facilities should never be targeted. The European Union (EU) calls on Israel to take immediate and effective measures to increase the provision of urgently needed humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

The EU condemns the 18 September attack at the crossing. Israel has a right to defend itself, but it must be exercised in accordance with international law. Full respect for international law, including international humanitarian law, is an obligation that must be adhered to.

The EU calls for restraint and reiterates its call for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages.
