FRISCO, Texas - Four Southeastern Oklahoma State University students, along with recent graduates and current faculty members, presented their research at the annual convention of the Southwestern Psychological Association (SWPA) last week, including one award-winning presentation.
Haley Langley, a senior from Durant in the Honors Program and a Parsons Scholar, presented her research titled "Domestic Violence Exposure Before Age 16: Understanding Female Sexual Attitudes and Depression." This presentation was recognized as a top 10 Poster Presentation in the SWPA Showcase Poster Session and Langley was awarded a scholarship for her outstanding work. Langley is mentored by Dr. Amy Madewell.
Adam Canler, a senior from Durant in the McNair Scholars Program majoring in Psychology, presented his research titled "Risk-Taking Under Scarcity: The Mindset Factor." Adam is mentored by Dr. Joe Simmons-Rudolph.
Mark Gardner, a senior from Ringling majoring in Psychology, presented his research within a workshop titled, "Four Levers to Reduce Math Anxiety and Inadequacy for Student Academic Support" and a poster titled, "From Avoidance to Engagement: Testing Opt-Out Tutoring in a Behavioral Statistics Course." Mark is mentored by Cameron Coley and Dr. Amy Madewell.
Shanna McCrary-Chill, a senior from Ardmore in the McNair Scholars Program majoring in Psychology, presented her research titled "Pet Ownership as a Protective Factor against Childhood Emotional Neglect." Shanna is mentored by Dr. Amy Madewell.
Dr. Jennifer Hicks, Dr. Lakshmi Narayanan, Dr. Madewell, faculty from the Southeastern Psychology Department, along with Dr. Tara Hembrough of the University of the Incarnate Word, presented about teaching practices utilized at SE to increase student engagement titled, "Utilizing Strengths-Based Approaches to Develop Relevant Models of Instruction and Intervention.
Karina Treviño, a recent SE graduate and McNair Scholar from Madill presented with Dr. Narayanan and Dr. Shanker Menon, associate professor of management and marketing in the John Massey School of Business, about "Humor in the Workplace: The Power of Laughter" and they presented a poster about, "AI Applications in the workplace: An IO psychology perspective."
Treviño also presented an article she co-wrote with Drs. Madewell and Hembrough titled, "Identity, gender, and politics: Creating belonging for Hispanic women in literature and other courses" in the International Journal of Instruction.
"We are proud of Haley, Mark, Shanna, Adam, and Karina for their presentations and many accomplishments that have brought them this far," said Dr. Amy Madewell, Professor of Psychology and Psychology program coordinator. "Inclusion at this convention and earning awards are significant accomplishments and reflections of their dedication to research and academic excellence."
