The city of Elgin is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, with a series of events celebrating culture, history and community.
Residents are invited to take part in performances, exhibits and celebrations across the city, including:
Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson as a way to recognize the contributions, histories and cultures of Hispanic and Latino Americans. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to a monthlong celebration, observed each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
