ACP Says Good Initial Steps in Administration’s Announcement of Health Care Plan

Statement attributable to:
Jason M. Goldman, MD, MACP
President, American College of Physicians

WASHINGTON January 16, 2026-The American College of Physicians is encouraged by some of the proposals that were included in the Trump administration's plan for health care reform that was announced yesterday. We are glad to see the administration focus on the need to lower the cost of prescription drugs and increase price transparency in the health care industry.

It is important to note, though, that funding for health savings accounts (HSA) is not a substitute for affordable comprehensive insurance coverage provided by Affordable Care Act (ACA)-compliant plans that guarantee coverage for recommended preventive services and ensure coverage for patients when they are sick. Increasing funding for HSAs should supplement, not supplant the enhanced premium tax credits for ACA marketplace plans.

We urge the administration to continue to advance proposals that will translate into savings for the American public, while increasing access to comprehensive health care services for all Americans.
