City of Southfield Monitoring Large Gatherings to Support Public Safety

The City of Southfield is aware of the new and increasingly popular gatherings commonly referred to as "teen takeovers." Over the weekend, the City responded to an incident involving a large crowd on Telegraph Road that created traffic and public safety concerns in the surrounding area.

These types of gatherings can create unsafe conditions when crowds disrupt traffic flow, impact nearby businesses, and affect surrounding properties.

Southfield Police responded to crowd and traffic concerns in the area, including unsafe pedestrian activity along Telegraph Road and disruptions affecting nearby businesses. Officers worked to disperse the crowd and restore order without major incident.

The incident remains under review, including potential zoning and ordinance violations associated with the event.

In response, the City is evaluating additional enforcement and preventative measures related to unauthorized large-scale gatherings in coordination with property owners, businesses, and regional law enforcement agencies. These efforts may include increased monitoring of identified gathering locations, enhanced traffic enforcement, and continued coordination with neighboring communities and public safety partners.

Events that create unsafe conditions or disrupt public spaces will continue to be addressed through appropriate enforcement action.

The City encourages residents, businesses, and property owners to work collaboratively with public safety officials to help maintain a safe environment throughout the city. Residents who become aware of planned gatherings that may pose public safety concerns are encouraged to contact the Southfield Police Department at (248) 796-5500.

The City appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents and business owners as these matters are addressed.
