Gas Spill closes SB 101 at Hellyer in Santa Clara County

Published: Dec 26, 2025

Schedule: Thursday, Dec. 25

Santa Clara County - Caltrans maintenance crews closed southbound 101 at Hellyer Rd. just before 05:30AM on December 25th due to an overturned big rig spilling between 600 and 700 tons of gas onto the roadway. Hazmat teams are on site addressing the issue.

Southbound traffic is being diverted at Yerba Buena Rd. Currently there is little traffic impact due to lighter Christmas Day traveling.

The estimated time for reopening is between 4PM and 5PM today (Dec 25th).

Please drive with caution. Slow for the Cone Zone and Be Work Zone Alert. Caltrans thanks motorists for their patience while we work to maintain our state's highways, bridges, and tunnels.
