UNM launches 2026 safety survey

As part of the University's commitment to safety across the campus, The University of New Mexico is launching its annual Culture of Safety survey, starting Monday, Sept. 14.

Since 2023, UNM Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) has sent the survey to audit working conditions in labs, facilities areas and other zones, as part of efforts to direct improvements to safety equipment, policies and training across campus.

"Every day, thousands of us work in labs, classrooms, offices, and facilities across UNM. Everyone deserves to go home healthy and uninjured at the end of each workday," said Casey Hall, director of UNM EHS. "Faculty, staff and student feedback is always critical to improving campus safety."

Feedback from prior surveys led to multiple initiatives, including:

  • an Executive Safety Committee
  • new incident reporting systems
  • additional resources for workplace safety improvements, and
  • department-specific safety measures.

The survey focuses specifically on occupational health and safety, including workplace hazards, safety equipment, training, procedures, and the safety culture in work areas.

Surveys will be sent to UNM community members via email, and provided in English and Spanish. Additionally, printed assets will be provided to groups who don't typically work on computers across the campus.

"All survey responses are anonymous and UNM only sees compiled results, never individual responses," said Hall. "We always want to encourage honest feedback, since this is crucial to identifying any gaps that may exist, so we can make improvements."

The survey will be available for two weeks through Sept. 27. Links to English and Spanish surveys are provided below.
