Europe must not waiver on its climate targets

Setting an ambitious 2040 goal will give Europe a stable and predictable framework on the path to climate neutrality. It will help direct investment toward cleaner technologies and strengthen the ability of European companies to compete globally. Reducing Europe's reliance on imported fossil fuels will also make the Union more resilient to future shocks and help maintain its leadership in global climate talks, including at COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

We know the road to a 90% reduction will test Europe's industrial strength - and many sectors already face high energy costs and complex regulations that hinder growth. Simplifying the rules and addressing these barriers is essential to keep production and innovation in Europe.

With this in mind, climate ambition and industrial success must advance together, but this is possible.

By uniting environmental goals with a strong, competitive economy, the EU can shape a new era of clean prosperity that benefits people, businesses and the planet.
