Slovenia and Hungary share many interests, with a particular focus on the two national communities

"Our neighbours are our key partners in the fields of trade, energy security, transport connectivity, shared care for the Northern Adriatic, migration management, minority protection and overcoming historical burdens," said Minister Kajzer.

After taking office at the beginning of June, Minister Kajzer stressed that enhancing ties and cooperation with neighbouring countries and wider in Central Europe is one of the key priorities of Slovenia and its foreign policy. During Minister Orbán's visit, he said: "I am greatly honoured to host the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs as my first guest in Slovenia. This clearly reflects the importance that Slovenia places on its relations with Hungary and on good neighbourly cooperation. Good neighbourly relations cannot be taken for granted; they are built through dialogue, trust and tangible mutual projects. This brings development, progress and a better quality of life to the wider region."

The ministers focused on the areas in which the two countries are most closely connected, such as trade, energy, infrastructure and transport connectivity. Minister Kajzer emphasised his vision of a long-term strategic partnership with Hungary. Joint infrastructure and economic projects increase the competitiveness of both economies, improve energy security and strengthen connectivity and development in the wider Central European region. "In addition to the deepening of economic cooperation, we also seek a more balanced investment flow. Slovenia values the presence of Hungarian investment in its economy. At the same time, we wish for an open and encouraging business environment for Slovenian investors in Hungary, as this would further strengthen our partnership," he said.

Highlighting an example of excellent cooperation, Minister Kajzer pointed to the launch of the Cirkovce-Pince transmission line at the end of 2022, adding that Slovenia remains firmly committed to constructing a cross-border gas transmission line in accordance with the October 2023 Memorandum of Understanding. Slovenia also appreciates the constructive cooperation between the operators Plinovodi and FGSZ, who are successfully advancing the project, as evidenced by the signing of the letter of intent in March.

"The gas transmission line will strengthen energy security and the long-term resilience of the region. The project will enable future expansion of capacities and integration into the wider gas corridor towards Italy, thereby creating a solid foundation for the development of cross-border hydrogen infrastructure. This will result in more reliable energy supplies, new development opportunities for companies and greater resilience for both countries in the face of future energy challenges," the Minister added.

During the talks in Ljubljana and Bled, the ministers devoted considerable attention to both national communities: Slovenians in Hungary and Hungarians in Slovenia. "The national communities represent a bridge of trust, cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries. They contribute to cultural, linguistic and cross-border cooperation, which is why we remain committed to ensuring exemplary care for both communities," emphasised Minister Kajzer, who will also visit the Youth House in Hodoš with Minister Orbán. The Youth House is an example of good practice and a successful project financed from the joint development fund.
