Daines on Fox Business: “The Democrats’ War Powers Resolution is Unconstitutional”

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Steve Daines today joined Stuart Varney on Fox Business to discuss the latest on the Iran war.

Daines on War Powers resolution:

Stuart, we always have the ability to exercise oversight. Look at yesterday, you had the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, Dan Caine in front of the Appropriations Committee, Secretary Hegseth, Secretary Rubio, they are in routine contact with members of the U.S. Senate, so we are always engaged. I was at Vice President Vance's residence recently, having dinner talking about Iran. So, we have lots of opportunity to issue oversight. But I think it's unconstitutional. The Founding Fathers had very specific separation of powers. They gave Congress the purse, spending. That's our constitutional power. They gave the President an Article II Section II, the commander in chief responsibilities. That is wisdom. You've got to have the commander in chief who is executing a war, not having Congress doing that. So, I think it's unconstitutional, and I'll be voting against it.

Daines on passing military funding:

I fully support that, Stuart. We've got to maintain this peace through strength posture. It's very important. We give the U.S. military and the president all the robust options, including the support. So, I'll support it. I think we've got a pretty good chance of getting that passed in the Senate.

Daines on ending the Iranian conflict:

Nobody wants to end this conflict more than President Trump. He's executing a war at the moment to protect our children and grandchildren, to ensure this dangerous ideology, this dangerous regime never has nuclear weapons and the ability to take the world to its knees. President Trump is working hard to end the war, but there's only one position or posture that the Iranians respect, and that's the position of strength. They will get to a continued weakened posture, and I hope that will yield an outcome. A negotiated settlement would be the best outcome. But President Trump knows it is about peace through strength. He'll have relentless force used against this corrupt, evil regime, until they are taken to their knees. And if there's a deal to be made, I'm confident President Trump can make it.
