Eastbound I-96 sink hole repairs at M-39 (Southfield Freeway) continue with additional lane, ramp closures

DETROIT, Mich. - Repairs continue on a sinkhole that has formed in the eastbound I-96 local lanes east of M-39 (Southfield Freeway) in Detroit. Additional lane and ramp closures are necessary to provide crews enough space to safely do their work.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, through early March, the following restrictions will be in place:

  • The eastbound I-96 local lanes at M-39 will be closed. (Traffic in those lanes must use either M-39 or the eastbound I-96 express lanes.)
  • Eastbound I-96 local lane traffic between US-24 (Telegraph Road) and M-39 will be able to access M-39 or eastbound I-96 express lanes only.
  • The eastbound I-96 express lanes ramp to I-96 local lanes at M-39 will be closed.

Lane and ramp closures previously in place will remain through early spring:

  • The northbound M-39 ramp to the eastbound I-96 local lanes is closed.
  • Southbound M-39 can only access the ramp to the eastbound I-96 express lanes.

Eastbound I-96 local lanes can be accessed from Greenfield Road and further east.
