WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced that her bipartisan Holocaust Education and Antisemitism Lessons (HEAL) Act advanced out of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. The bipartisan HEAL Act would strengthen Holocaust education at public schools and increase awareness of Holocaust educational resources available to local communities. This bipartisan legislation Senator Rosen introduced with Senator James Lankford (R-OK) would direct the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to conduct a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive study on Holocaust education. This study would help identify the resources and methods available to public schools to improve the ways in which educators teach students across the country about the Holocaust and antisemitism.
"One of the best ways to tackle antisemitism and hatred is to teach children about the Holocaust and what can happen when one community is blamed for the world's problems," said Senator Rosen. "I am proud that my bipartisan legislation has advanced in committee and is one step closer to becoming law. As we near the 80th anniversary of the Nuremberg trials this fall, we must continue to ensure future generations are taught the important lessons of this terrible moment in history."
As co-chairs of the Senate Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, Senators Rosen and Lankford have been leading the fight against antisemitism. The Task Force successfully pushed for the development of the first-ever national strategy to combat antisemitism. In May, Senators Rosen and Lankford introduced the Jewish American Security Act, which will strengthen federal efforts to fight antisemitism - including in U.S. academic settings, Jewish communal institutions, and online. Last year, Senator Rosen successfully pushed the Coast Guard to reverse course on a policy change that would have downgraded the classification of swastikas from hate symbols to "potentially divisive."
