Helen Mirren on Receiving the TIFF Groundbreaker Award & Recalls A Time When She Was Unable to Buy a House or Get a Credit Card Because She Was a Single Woman

Helen: I just received they call it The Groundbreaker Award.

Drew: At TIFF at the film festival in Toronto, you got the Groundbreaker award.

Helen: Yes, yes I did. Which was lovely, but I was, I couldn't think of what to say and then just before the evening, in the afternoon, I thought, thinking about groundbreaking, and I thought who is groundbreaking? And then I thought of Gloria Steinem and Dolly Parton, that we lost just so recently and how they were the real, they were the groundbreakers, you know, to understand how the world was for women. Even when I was young, you know, I couldn't buy a house and I had the money. I couldn't get a mortgage without a man in my life. I don't think you could get a credit card without, and you certainly couldn't get birth control without some sort of proof that you were either married or getting married. It was incredible, you know, it was people kind of forget, to me, you know, it was when it was in this era, you know, certainly when I was that age.

Drew: I've been watching 'MobLand' season 2. I'm knee-deep into two and you're, there's so many handsome blokes in 'MobLand' you know, whether it's Pierce Brosnan.

Helen: I know, an excess of beauty.

Drew: And you're so sexy in this show.

Helen: I love doing it, it's so fun. I mean, it's so fun. And I, you know, I pointed out, it's great, you've got a lot of my great roles up here behind me, you know, winning the Oscar, the Queen, working with Harrison on 'Mosquito Coast' you know, a lot of great experiences. Maeve is up there with them, she's fantastic.

Drew: She's a real naughty woman and I hear because I have, I tried to change so much for my kids, you know, quit smoking, stop drinking, wake up early, take care of my mental health, focus on parenting, read every book I could, not even knowing if the answers are in a book, but I'm gonna read it anyway. I'm gonna talk to people and the one thing I'm like, listen, the swearing stays, OK?

Helen: You can't do it, but I can't let go. I've gotta do it, yeah.

Drew: Are you a fellow curser?

Helen: Not too much, a bit. I used to be much more than I was, cause when I first came into my industry, the world of acting, especially in theater you know, actors swear just like we do in 'MobLand' they swear like that, it's like a part of the vernacular, it's just like you don't think about it, it's just how you talk.

Drew: It's a verb, it's a noun, it's, it's in everything. Did cursing ever get you in trouble?

Helen: Yes, oh yes, oh really, well, in the early days, as I said, when I was a young actress and in that world and everybody swore, so I did as well oh, I was always being thrown out of pubs, for example, you know.

Drew: This is what I'm talking about, yes.

Drew: My friend texted me last night and she said, 'I have a guy I want to set you up with, but he's been divorced 3 times,' and I said, 'So have I.' And she was like, 'Oh great, OK, perfect.' So yes, I wish I had just had relationships before.

Helen: You should have come to me earlier on Drew. Love them, love them, love them, give them all of that. Don't get married, not until it's the right time, and I waited, I was 38 when I got married for the first time to Taylor. And obviously we're still married, but I waited that long, partly I said I don't have anything against marriage, particularly, I have something against divorce. I don't quite get the point in getting married if you might, you might get divorced. So I waited until I was in a relationship that I really knew we were in it for the long haul.

Drew: I love your show because I think there is a gentleness there. It's sort of, it starts with you. It starts with the name. There's a playfulness there. You seem like a well-intended, fun-spirited, not gotcha.

Jake: It's that, that and by the way, that was always the thing when I started the show I was like, I never wanna be a gotcha show. I was like, it's not gonna be fun and that's not my, like what I want is to make people laugh. I never, my goal was never to have people leaving my show being like, you know, or watching my show being like, oh my God, like the goal is to just like laugh and that doesn't work with a gotcha moment.

Drew: And was there something in your life experience that made you go, that's not who I am or what I want to be?

Jake: I think it was just, I'm very insecure and I'm very, and I remember when I started out in the industry and I was always so terrified of doing press and my number one fear was that somebody would ask me that type of question. So I thought when I was starting my own show, if that was my number one fear, why would I ever want to put that on someone else?

Jake: First up, the buzz around the buzz. Allure reports that the buzz cut is taking over…I recently buzzed my hair myself, and I've never had so much flutter on my socials. Is the buzz back?

Ross: I think the buzz looks good on certain people. I tried it once when I was in college because I wanted to look like Demi Moore in GI Jane. And I looked less GI Jane and more jellyfish with it because I didn't have the chins to pull it off. So you look beautiful. You have a beautiful shaped head.

Drew: You have a nice shaped.

Jake: I was, well, I was deciding between an earring and a tattoo or a buzz, and I was like, well, my hair grows back, so I'm gonna buzz my hair.

Drew: How are you feeling about the tattoo and the earring?

Jake: I really wanna do a little huggy. I wanna do a little huggy earring, but someone in my life told me that if I did it they'd rip it off my ear.

Sunny: I mean, I like the tattoo idea.

Jake: I know I was gonna do a banana peel on my thigh because there's this, I know it's funny, but there's a quote that, that says if you slip on a banana peel people will laugh at you, but if you tell people you slip on a banana peel, it's your laugh. So it's like a reminder to make fun of myself and so I thought, and I thought like that's if I were ever to get a tattoo it'd be that.

Jake: I think for me it's I love sharing music back and forth, like I had this guy that I have a crush on send me like an album the other day and I've never gotten into Oasis.

Sunny: And they're back together honey.

Jake: That's what I'm saying and he sent me the album and I thought I was sending him back the most niche song. I sent him 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and I wrote this the one, and I went to the Spotify streams, 1.5 billion streams. My jaw dropped. I said I have to go to bed. I have to go to bed.

Drew: How did they respond?

Jake: He said, 'Yeah, it's quite popular.'

Drew: What was the origin of the octopus?

Jake: I was doing reviews. I was working at a record label my junior year of college, and my friend Drew and I, yes, her name was Drew, and Drew and I always used to, every time we got octopus, we would send it to each other and say puss, puss, puss, puss. And so I was like, oh my God, how funny would it be if I started an octopus review account called like Pass that Pus and then we would just go out to restaurants and review it and it kind of like became this like niche thing in my college and then I started posting them on TikTok and it kind of just allowed me to be comfortable showing my personality and then I started doing these skits and it just all kind of happened like that.

Drew: Can I read you a quote of yours?

Mitski: Okay.

Drew: So your quote is, 'I think the key to seeing the beauty in life is to keep in mind that you're going to die, and everything you see is a miracle that you may never see again, and then everything becomes beautiful.'

Mitski: I believe it.

Drew: Did you always believe it? Did something happen to make you believe it?

Mitski: So a few things happened in my, growing up where I just, I got to death's door and it was up to me to say, do I walk through the door or do I back away and so from a very young age I've just been very in touch with death, and that's given me so much perspective in my life and I'm I just every day that I'm alive is a miracle.

Drew: And someone said this to me recently too, I wanna make friends with death and I feel that your quote is like the directive of how you make friends with death, because that's a beautiful concept to make friends with death, but how do you do it? I feel like your quote is a roadmap.

Mitski: Yeah, how do you, I mean, how do you think you make friends with death? I still haven't figured it out. It's still a scary thing.

Drew: The only thing I've got so far is to stop making it the thing I run away from, to stop making it the thing I fear, that is actually at the center of it. My fears have corrupted me from a greater happiness and a way greater peace.

Mitski: That's so funny you say that because you seem like the most fearless person. Like it doesn't seem like you've had any fear, which is funny you say that you have all these fears that have corrupted, I don't know, your happiness because it doesn't seem like it from afar.
