Instances of influenza are relatively low, but Meritus Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Anand Budi warns that could change quickly if precautions aren't taken.
Nationally and in Maryland, the rate of flu cases is about 5.1%, a relatively low risk, he said. However, at this time in 2025, the rate was about 2.5%.
"My concern is that we're starting to see some rise in patients coming to the emergency department, urgent care and primary care," he said. "We're also seeing some admissions to the hospital as a result of influenza."
He has simple advice to prevent the flu's spread.
"This is the best time to get the influenza vaccine," he said. "Six months and above, children and adults, should get the vaccine because that's the best preventative way to avoid any serious illness."
Dr. Budi also advises washing your hands frequently as the colder weather forces more people indoors. It not only prevents cross-infection, but it also decreases the chances of infection from others.
Also, cover your coughs and sneezes and be mindful of those around you who might be at higher risk, such as infants and older adults.
Symptoms of the flu include fever of 101 or 102 degrees, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headache, tiredness, weakness, vomiting and diarrhea.
Generally, it's best to stay home, rest and drink plenty of fluids if you have the flu. However, if you have flu-like symptoms and are very sick or have underlying medical conditions, Dr. Budi suggests being seen by your primary care provider or urgent care.
"The treatment of influenza in the early stages with medication is highly effective, because if you cross past 48 hours, the treatment is not as effective," he said.
