UW to Showcase Agricultural Research at Powell Field Day June 30

The University of Wyoming's Powell Research and Extension Center (PREC) will host its annual field day Tuesday, June 30, at 747 Road 9.

The field day will contain two sessions designed for different audiences. Both are free and open to the public.

A morning session from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. is geared toward agricultural professionals and others interested in the technical aspects of PREC's research projects. The afternoon session, from 2-5 p.m., is an open house created for community members and families.

The morning technical session will open at 9:30 a.m. with registration and agricultural technology demonstrations, including exhibitions of tractors, agricultural implements and drones.

The technical field tour will begin at 10 a.m. and include presentations about nitrogen and plant growth regulators for grass seed production; burndown and herbicide tolerance in dry beans and sugar beets; and nutrient optimization in sugar beets. The morning session also will feature an agricultural drone spray demonstration. Participants are asked to attend the full tour, which will begin at 10 a.m. and end at noon.

A raffle of items donated by local businesses and a free barbecue lunch will take place at noon for those who attend the morning session.

PREC will briefly close following lunch.

The afternoon open house is designed for community members and families. From 2-5 p.m., participants are invited to explore displays about subjects that include insects and plant diseases; seed identification; combines and tractors; and the PREC hoop house. Activities that offer prizes for children also will be available.

At 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., participants can attend demonstrations featuring Pistol and Pete, UW's draft horse team. Two separate field tours highlighting less technical presentations will begin at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Open house attendees may choose which activities to participate in and explore the site at their own pace. No pre-registration is required for the afternoon session of the field day.
