September 3rd is National Protect Your Groundwater Day

Protect Your Groundwater Day serves as an annual reminder for water well owners to test, tend, and treat their private water systems. The National Groundwater Association encourages annual inspections of private water systems by certified water well contractors to ensure systems are operating correctly and producing safe and healthy water.

If you live in a rural area, it is likely that your daily water supply comes from a well on your property. More than 75 percent of Wyoming's population relies on groundwater for part, or all, of their drinking water supply. This water comes from more than 53,000 wells. Experts recommend having these systems inspected every year.

WellOwner.org is supported by the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP.org) as part of the USEPA-funded program "Improving Water Quality through Training and Technical Assistance to Private Well Owners. Resources available in Wyoming include:

  • Department of Environmental Quality, Water Quality Division's Know Your Well Program contains information on common well contaminants, testing information, and links to other resources related to water quality for private domestic well owners.
  • Local Conservation Districts may have resources available including well sampling assistance or cost sharing programs for laboratory analytical services.
  • Wyoming State Engineer's Office Groundwater Section will be able to assist with information and questions regarding well permits and water rights.
  • The Wyoming Water Well Contractor's Licensing Board is available to assist in finding a licensed professional to work on your well or install water treatment.
