WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) sent a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer urging the Trump administration to secure enforceable protections for Florida's specialty crop growers as trade negotiations with Mexico continue.
"Florida farmers should not be forced out of business because of unfair trade practices that favor foreign producers," said Rep. Steube. "For too long, Mexican produce imports have undercut our hardworking growers during our harvest seasons. President Trump is putting American farmers first, and any new trade agreement with Mexico must deliver real, enforceable protections for Florida's agricultural industry."
For years, Florida farmers have faced unfair competition from Mexican produce imports flooding U.S. markets during domestic harvest seasons, driving down prices and threatening American agricultural producers. Rep. Steube is calling for product-specific tariff-rate quotas to address these persistent challenges before any trade agreement with Mexico is finalized.
In his letter, Rep. Steube highlighted Ambassador Greer's previous commitments to addressing seasonal import competition during the USMCA review process, including testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee acknowledging that existing trade remedies have failed to adequately protect domestic growers.
