On Friday, 16 October, at the close of its 108th congress, the National Union of Journalists (SNJ), together with Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), issued a call for the immediate release of Christophe Gleizes, a French journalist detained in Algeria.
Alongside Sylvie and Francis Godard, the journalist's mother and stepfather, these organisations are urging all journalists and newsrooms across France to show solidarity and mobilise in the coming weeks, particularly on Wednesday, 11 November, which will mark the reporter's 500th day in detention.
"RSF welcomes the profession's mobilisation and encourages newsrooms to publish a running count of the number of days Christophe has been detained on their websites and in their print editions, and to display it on air. Together, the professional organisations are sending a clear and unequivocal message: Christophe is indeed a journalist, and he must be allowed to return to his family and his work. Following the French Cup final dedicated to Christophe, the crucial support of French Football Federation (FFF) President Philippe Diallo, followed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and the words of French national team head coach Zinedine Zidane, RSF still has plenty in reserve and is stepping up its public campaign, with further major mobilisation initiatives planned in the run-up to 11 November, marking 500 days of imprisonment.
"The International Federation of Journalists and its 600,000 members are calling on everyone to mobilise in support of Christophe Gleizes. In Algeria, India, Russia and more than 160 countries, IFJ teams are fighting to demand the release of all our imprisoned fellow journalists. Depriving a journalist of their freedom means depriving society as a whole of its fundamental right to access free, independent and verified information.
"The European Federation of Journalists is fully committed to this collective struggle for the release of Christophe Gleizes. To symbolise the support of European journalists, at the end of May, on the second anniversary of his arrest, we shared a photograph of Belarusian journalist Laryssa Shchyrakova wearing a T-shirt from the campaign to free Christophe. Laryssa spent three years in prison and was expelled to Poland. This was her first public gesture since her release.
