Fatal Traffic Collision

RIVERSIDE, CA - On Sunday, May 21, 2017, at approximately 9:15 PM, Riverside Police and Fire responded to a report of vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collision on California Ave at Heidi Rd in the City of Riverside. Officers determined a 2016 Kia Sorento, which was being driven by Riverside resident in his early 20's, was east on California Ave in the number 1 traffic lane. An adult male pedestrian left the north curb of California Ave and began walking south across the traffic lanes of California between Heidi Rd and Wayne Ct. Just prior to the collision, the driver of the Kia said he saw the pedestrian and attempted to move his vehicle into the number 2 traffic lane; but was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. Subsequent to the collision, the driver stopped at the scene and notified police. The pedestrian, an adult male, was pronounced deceased at Riverside Community Hospital.

Officers from the Riverside Police Department M.A.I.T. were called to the scene and are investigating. The name of the decedent will be released by the Riverside County Coroner's Office pending their investigation and notification of next of kin.
