Chip seal pavement maintenance scheduled for multiple Columbia streets beginning July 7

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Beginning Tuesday, July 7, City of Columbia Public Works street crews will begin chip seal pavement maintenance on the streets listed below. Weather permitting, crews will work Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until the project is complete.

Chip sealing is a pavement preservation method used to extend the life of existing asphalt. The process involves spraying a thin layer of heated asphalt emulsion on the roadway, followed by a layer of small stone chips. These chips are then pressed into the surface using heavy rollers. The stones provide improved traction and help protect the underlying pavement from water intrusion and oxidation. After the surface has cured, crews return to sweep up excess stone.

Orange 'No Parking' signs will be placed at least 24 hours in advance along streets scheduled for maintenance. Drivers are asked to avoid parking on these streets during the dates and times listed on the signs. Vehicles parked in work zones during active hours may be subject to towing.

City of Columbia Public Works appreciates residents' cooperation as crews carry out this essential maintenance work.
