UWL's Ben Westrick finds care, convenience at Student Health Center
From the common cold to chronic pain and many ailments in between, the Student Health Center at UW-La Crosse provides high-quality care that helps students feel and perform at their best.
Operated by staff from Mayo Clinic Health System, the center offers convenient campus access to Mayo Clinic outpatient services including primary care, same-day care and physical therapy. Between UWL and Western Technical College, nearly 4,000 unique patients receive care annually.
One of these students is Ben Westrick, a junior biology major at UWL. Westrick, who visits the center regularly to receive allergy shots, says the combination of proximity and quality care makes managing his health simple and stress-free.
"I appreciate how acceissble and easy the process is," he says, noting the seamless transition from receiving care back home to receiving care on campus. "The staff are consistently friendly and welcoming, which makes each visit a positive experience."
The wide range of services offered at the center - physical exams, pain management, injury treatment, mental health and dietary counseling, immunizations, lab tests, referrals, and more - are administered in an atmosphere of kindness, inclusivity and respect. Center staff are led by the guiding principle that health and wellness are key contributors to academic success.
For Westrick, who plans to attend dental school after finishing his bachelor's degree, the education and care he has received at UWL reflect the kind of healthcare professional he aspires to be.
"My time at UWL has helped prepare me by building a strong science foundation and giving me exposure to healthcare settings that emphasize patient care," he says.
