Upgrades, changes to Teton Pass roadside signage

JACKSON, Wyo. - The Wyoming Department of Transportation traffic crews will be installing upgraded signage on Wyoming State Highway 22, Teton Pass, beginning Monday, Sept. 21. The work will take place during daytime hours from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for three days. Drivers will see lane closures, flagger-controlled traffic, and possible short delays.

The upgraded signage will include "Must Stop Brake Check" signs at the summit and "No Parking" signs at the gravel escape ramp and vehicle arrestor system. These signs will be installed the week of Sept. 21.

"The planned upgrades for these signs have been in the works for several weeks. We have been waiting on fabrication," District 3 Area Traffic Supervisor Tara Finley said.

Additional retrofitted signs that warn motorists "sharp curves", "steep grades" and "stay in low gear" will be upgraded to say "All Vehicles" rather than "Truckers". The new signs are currently under review by WYDOT and will be installed as each is fabricated and delivered. That work is also anticipated to take place the week of Monday, Sept. 21.

"We have about 50 signs from the state line to Wilson informing drivers of steep grades and to use low gear. WYDOT is currently working on reviewing the rest of the signs and their placement," said Darin Kaufman, District 3 Traffic Engineer.

WYDOT is also in the process of creating diagrammatic map signs, with "You are here" that will illustrate roadway grades and other restrictions, and the alternate route through Swan Valley, similar to signs on US 16 and US14A. These diagrammatic map signs are currently being designed with the intent to install them at the scale house, the state line and at the turnout at the summit.

WYDOT is actively reviewing safety improvements and future infrastructure enhancements as part of our State Transportation Improvement Plan process.

Drivers can do their part in making Teton Pass safer by wearing a seat belt, slowing down and obeying posted speeds, using a lower gear when descending steep grades, and putting down their phone and paying attention to their surroundings.
