Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members will benefit from a new pensionable compensation measure that recognizes their dedication and years of service. The first Military Service Pay (MSP) payment, covering the period from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, is expected in December 2026.
MSP is one of several compensation and benefits improvements announced by the Government of Canada on August 8, 2025, as part of a broader effort to rebuild, rearm, and reinvest in the CAF. While all other initiatives were implemented by April 2026, including those like the pay raise that were prioritized to ensure the greatest immediate benefit to all CAF members and their families, the MSP followed a later timeline because of the significant complexity in its implementation. Work to address this has not stopped since last summer's announcement, and we can now share additional information on the planned roll-out.
What is Military Service Pay?
MSP is a new annual, pensionable benefit that recognizes the commitment of CAF members throughout their careers. It will be delivered as a lump-sum payment beginning in December 2026, with subsequent lump-sum payments issued each November. Eligible members will receive up to $6,000 per year, depending on their years of service, component, and employment level.
Implementation timeline
MSP is expected to be implemented in December 2026. Its rollout is more complex than other compensation measures as it must be applied across both the Regular Force and the Primary Reserve, which operate under different legislative authorities, pay systems, and pension frameworks. Significant effort is underway to support a smooth implementation, with a focus on accuracy and minimizing disruptions to existing pay and benefits.
CAF leadership continues to prioritize a careful and coordinated approach to safeguard the integrity of the overall compensation system and ensure that this benefit is implemented for the benefit of CAF members and their families as soon as possible.
How much will members receive?
Annual MSP amounts are based on years of continuous service:
Regular Force and Reserve Force (Class "C")
Reserve Force (Class "A" and "B")
Eligibility and service calculation
Eligibility for MSP is based on continuous service in the CAF since the member's most recent enrolment.
Key considerations include:
The introduction of MSP is part of broader compensation improvements supporting CAF members and their families. Updates will continue to be shared as implementation progresses.
The chain of command remains the primary source of information, providing members with clear, consistent, and timely updates.
