Eastbound I-70 Traffic Shifts Planned in Warren County

Work begins on another portion of the Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville project

HANNIBAL - Weather permitting, traffic shifts are scheduled to begin as early as May 4 in Warren County on eastbound I-70 between the Wright City Rest Area to east of Route F/J/Elm Street Interchange in Wright City (mile marker 197.6 to 200.2) as work begins on another portion of the Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville project. Constructions crews, in coordination with the Missouri Department of Transportation, will perform striping operations and begin placing the temporary concrete barrier wall to accommodate the traffic shift. Eastbound I-70 will be reduced to one lane between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. nightly.

I-70 eastbound traffic will be shifted to the left and this traffic pattern is expected to remain through this fall to allow for the full reconstruction of the permanent eastbound shoulder. While two lanes of traffic will be maintained during peak travel times, the eastbound lanes will be narrowed to 11 feet. Nightly lane closures between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. may occur throughout the project to support ongoing pavement work.

Motorists are encouraged to pay attention in work zones, drive the posted work zone speed limit, and allow extra time for travel. All work is weather dependent, and schedules are subject to change.

This work is part of the Improve I-70 Warrenton to Wentzville Project covering the eastern portion of I-70. It was awarded in November 2024. Construction is tentatively set to take place 2025-2028.

Missouri's FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and signed into law by the governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
