People with dependent children face higher poverty

In 2025, 22.1% of people living in households with dependent children in the EU were at risk of poverty or social exclusion (AROPE), compared with 19.8% of those without dependent children.

The AROPE rate for people living in households with dependent children was highest in Spain (29.9%), followed by Romania (29.4%) and Bulgaria (29.1%). In contrast, Slovenia (10.4%), the Netherlands (11.7%) and Cyprus (12.2%) recorded the lowest rates.

In 16 of 27 EU countries, the AROPE rate was higher for people living in households with dependent children than for people living in households without dependent children.
