Landslide emergency in Petacciato

Landslide emergency in Petacciato

9.4.2026

Priority question for written answer P-001456/2026
to the Commission
Rule 144
Matteo Ricci (S&D)

The reactivation of landslide activity in Petacciato (Campobasso Province) on 7 April has resulted in the closure of sections of the A14 motorway and National Road 16 (SS16 Adriatica) and the suspension of rail services on the line connecting Abruzzo and Molise. In addition to severely disrupting transport links across a wide area - the Marche, Abruzzo, Molise and Apulia Regions could even be cut off - the incident has also caused significant economic damage by hitting infrastructures and services alike.

One of the areas affected, Italy's Adriatic coastline, is an important stretch of the TEN-T Baltic-Adriatic Corridor.

We therefore ask the Commission:

  • 1.Has it already got in touch with the Italian authorities to find a rapid solution to an issue that is threatening an important section of the Baltic-Adriatic corridor and to ask them whether they have already requested the activation of the European Solidarity Fund?
  • 2.What will it do, in cooperation with the Italian authorities, to ensure that the aforementioned lines are reopened, to prevent further delays and to keep logistics operators and the public up to date?
  • 3.What instruments could the Commission bring to bear as regards infrastructure projects - like the reconstruction of the bridge over the River Trigno, a vital section of the SS16 - that are not part of emergency response efforts?
