Floodplain Property Reminder

Floodplain Properties - Please Read Before Beginning Repairs

If your home or business is in the FEMA mapped floodplain and receives damage by fire, tornado, flood or other event, you must contact the Bremer County Building and Zoning office before removing or repairing your property.

This applies to all structures - homes, businesses, garages, and sheds - even if you do not carry flood insurance.

After an event, the Building Official is required by federal law (National Flood Insurance Program) to inspect damaged buildings and determine the extent of damage. This is called a Substantial Damage inspection. The County must document damages before repairs begin.

Do NOT remove drywall, insulation, flooring, electrical, or mechanical equipment until an inspection is completed. Starting repairs before the inspection can create issues with insurance claims and may delay rebuilding.

You MAY:
• Pump out water
• Run fans and dehumidifiers
• Remove furniture and personal belongings
• Take photographs of all damage

You MUST contact the County BEFORE:
• Demolition of walls or ceilings
• Replacing furnaces, water heaters, or electrical
• Structural or contractor repairs

This process protects property owners and keeps the community eligible for federal flood insurance and disaster assistance programs.
