Washington, D.C. - A federal judge has overturned the stop rule order issued by the Trump administration on the Revolution Wind project in Rhode Island.
At the time of the stop work order, Revolution wind was already 80 percent completed-with 45 of its 65 wind turbines already installed. Once completed, Revolution Wind has the potential to power 350,000 homesin Rhode Island and Connecticut. The project has created 1,200 stable, well-paying jobsin the region, and would continue to support more job opportunities as the project develops.
The judge called the stop work order "the height of arbitrary and capricious," and reaffirmed that there was insufficient evidence of the 'national security concerns' the administration claimed to exist when it issued the order.
In response, Sierra Club Senior Advisor Nancy Pyne issued the following statement:
"Today's ruling at the D.C. Circuit Court reaffirms that Donald Trump and his administration's attacks on clean energy are not only reckless and harmful to our communities, but they are also illegal. Instead of embracing offshore wind for the reliable, homegrown energy it provides, this administration would rather take unlawful measures to kneecap its development in favor of dirty and expensive fossil fuels.
"This ruling is a victory for residents in Rhode Island and Connecticut, who are once again closer to having access to affordable and reliable energy without having to sacrifice their health to toxic fossil fuel pollution. The Sierra Club will continue this fight for offshore wind from coast to coast."
Sierra Club Connecticut Chapter Director Samantha Dynowski added:
"We join so many in our state in breathing a sigh of relief as Revolution Wind is able to continue construction. The Trump administration's actions were unlawful and careless. Every day of the stop work order meant a day without work for local Connecticut residents and further delays in delivering much-needed reliable, clean energy to our communities.
Completing Revolution Wind will cut air pollution, improve the health of our most vulnerable neighbors, and lower energy bills. We will continue to fight for Revolution Wind until it crosses the finish line."
