Area teenagers will join their voices in The University of Toledo High School Choral Festival on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe, a nationally known choral conductor and music educator, will instruct the young vocalists as guest clinician from 9 to 5 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts, ahead of a free, public concert at 5:30 p.m. in Doermann Theatre.
Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe is a professor emeritus of choral music at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
"Dr. Scheibe is an internationally renowned choral conductor with decades of experience and a wealth of knowledge in choral music education, and we are thrilled to have him at our University," said Dr. Karen Miskell, a senior lecturer and director of choral activities at UToledo. "This is a valuable opportunity to learn from him that will aid in students' individual musical growth and help to strengthen their respective high school programs as they return to share what they've learned with their peers."
Scheibe is a professor emeritus of choral music at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. He has extensive experience leading ensembles including at seven national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, two national conventions of the National Association for Music Education, the national conference of the National Collegiate Choral Organization and the World Symposium on Choral Music.
He has served in several national roles under the American Choral Directors Association, including national president from 2011 to 2013, and more recently served on the board of the International Federation for Choral Music.
At UToledo Scheibe will work with more than 80 students representing five area high schools to learn and rehearse five choral works.
