Fireworks use restricted in Iowa City; violators face minimum $250 fine

Due to public safety concerns, the use of fireworks inside Iowa City limits is prohibited except during specific dates and times allowed by City code. Violators can face a minimum $250 fine.

When are fireworks allowed in Iowa City?

Iowa City code prohibits the use of consumer and display fireworks except during designated dates and times surrounding Independence Day. In 2026, fireworks may only be used during the following hours:

  • Saturday, June 27: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 28: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Friday, July 3: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 4: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 5: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 11: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Fireworks may only be used on the private property of a consenting owner. Fireworks are never allowed on City property, including parks, streets, sidewalks, parking lots, parking ramps, trails, and other government buildings and facilities, regardless of the date or time.

Why can I buy fireworks in Iowa City, but not use them all the time?

State law prevents cities from prohibiting or restricting where consumer fireworks can be sold, but it does allow cities and counties to regulate when they may be used.

Iowa City's ordinance limits the use of fireworks to specific dates and times to help protect public safety, reduce fire risks, and minimize disturbances to people and pets who may be sensitive to loud noises.

How do I report illegal fireworks?

Residents are encouraged to speak directly with their neighbors regarding the use of illegal fireworks when it is safe to do so.

Reports can also be made to public safety dispatchers by calling 319-356-6800. Please provide an address when reporting a concern.

For questions about the local fireworks ordinance, contact Fire Marshal Axel Swanson by calling 319-356-5257 or emailing [email protected].
