Lakeview DMV resumes behind-the-wheel drive tests

LAKEVIEW - Just in time for the busy summer season, the Lakeview DMV at 855 South F St. is resuming behind-the-wheel drive test appointments starting May 19. The one-person office reopened in late March after an extended temporary closure but was unable to offer Class C drive tests at that time.

Only local preference drive test appointments will be scheduled following Senate Bill 9, which requires DMV field offices in 20 rural counties to give local preference to rural customers scheduling Class C behind-the-wheel drive tests.

"Rural county offices like Lakeview serve large geographic areas for all DMV transaction types. Customers in those counties can face challenges getting a driver's license due to the limited number of drive tests offered in their area, combined with the fact that customers from across Oregon sometimes come to those locations for a test," said Oregon DMV Administrator Amy Joyce. "Giving local preference improves the drive test process for people in these less populated areas." 

Lakeview customers can schedule local preference drive tests:

• At the Lakeview DMV through the lobby check-in kiosk, which will only display and allow scheduling of drive test appointments for that office.
• At the counter with Lakeview DMV staff.
• Through Customer Assistance at 503-945-5000. Customer Assistance will verify the address before making the appointment.

Lakeview DMV is open:

• 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
• 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday
• Closed daily from 12:30-2 p.m.

Senate Bill 9 applies to customers living in Baker, Clatsop, Crook, Curry, Gilliam, Grant, Harney, Hood River, Jefferson, Klamath, Lake, Malheur, Morrow, Sherman, Tillamook, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa, Wasco and Wheeler counties. Customers in those counties can schedule a drive test at a DMV office in the same county or within 50 miles of their residence address. DMV does not offer drive tests in Gilliam, Morrow, Sherman or Wheeler counties, so those customers can schedule a local-preference drive test at any rural DMV office that offers the service.

Customers who don't live in a rural county should continue to use DMV2U or call Customer Assistance to schedule drive test appointments or schedule with a third-party tester. Visit oregondmv.com for a list of certified Class C testers.
