City Urges Energy Conservation and Opens Cooling Centers
Glendale, CA - High temperatures are expected in Glendale over the next three days. In preparation for the heat, the City is activating its cooling centers and urging residents and businesses to take precautions, conserve electricity, and use available City resources to stay cool and safe.
Prolonged heat can increase demand on Glendale Water & Power's (GWP) electrical system as air conditioners run for longer periods throughout the day. GWP crews will closely monitor system conditions and take proactive steps to maintain reliable service during the heat.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to conserve electricity, when possible, particularly during periods of peak demand. Simple actions, such as delaying the use of major appliances until the evening, adjusting thermostats, and turning off unnecessary lights and electronics, can help reduce strain on the electrical grid.
To help residents stay cool, the City will activate four cooling centers from September 8 through September 10, 2026, for anyone seeking relief from the heat during the hottest parts of the day.
Residents also have several ways to stay cool through water play. Pacific Community Pool is open daily for recreational swim, and splash pads at Pacific Park and Cerritos Park are available daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Heat Safety Tips
  • Avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, generally between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher).
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Reduce strenuous activity and stay in the shade whenever possible.
  • Avoid heavy meals during periods of extreme heat.
  • If you do not have air conditioning, visit a cooling center or another air-conditioned location.
  • Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and shade.
Know the signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms of dehydration and heat cramps include dizziness, fatigue, fainting, headaches, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, and increased thirst. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention or call 911.
Energy Conservation Tips Residential Customers
  • Charge electric vehicles and use major appliances during the early morning hours or after 9:00 PM.
  • Set your thermostat to 78°F when home and 80°F when away, adjusting as needed for the health and well-being of your family and pets.
  • Close curtains and blinds, use ceiling fans when possible, turn off unnecessary lights, and unplug electronics not in use.
  • Use LED bulbs and keep your refrigerator full to improve energy efficiency.

  • Shift energy-intensive operations to the early morning or evening when possible.
  • Keep doors closed to retain cool air.
