Bales, Barns and Milkshakes: How a Summer Tradition is Connecting Families to Northeast Iowa Farming

On a sun-drenched Friday evening in Calmar, the air at Iowa's Dairy Center on the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Calmar campus was filled with the rhythmic hum of a tractor tram, the acoustic strumming of live music and the laughter of kids racing toward a petting zoo.

The June 5 gathering marked the second year for the "Grill and Chill on the Farm: Taste of Iowa Picnic." While the name is relatively new, inviting the community to experience Iowa's Dairy Center is a longstanding tradition.

"Living in the Midwest, we truly appreciate our summers," says Dave Lawstuen, an NICC agriculture instructor and member of the Northeast Iowa Dairy & Agriculture Foundation's Education Committee. "The weather combined with the great food, live music and tram tours led by farmers made for a perfect evening. Standing back and observing families enjoying the taste of Iowa foods, their milkshakes, the petting zoo and just having fun was a true standout moment."

Beyond the Grocery Aisle: Up Close and Personal

For the organizers, the heart of the night lies in bridging the gap between the grocery store shelf and the active, working farms that anchor Iowa's economy. As the nation's number two agricultural state-home to 87,000 family farms-Iowa's Dairy Center provides a rare opportunity for neighbors to see the care that goes into production first-hand.

Instead of lecturing from a distance, local farmers invited families right into the heart of the action.

"The farm tours deliver an immersive, educational experience that engages every sense," explains committee member Julie Uhlenhake. "The audience gets taken up close to our beef and dairy cattle through the barns, experiences the dynamic environment of an active dairy operation, and handles tactile elements like feed and bedding samples."

That transparency is exactly what makes the day so vital for the community. Committee member Gina Mashek notes that seeing is believing.

"Everyone should know exactly where their food comes from," says Mashek. "Farmers truly care about their animals and the product they are marketing. This helps to build a stronger relationship between the farmer and the customer."

A Local Feast

Of course, you can't throw a farm picnic without incredible food. The dinner plates and dessert tables served as a direct reflection of the local agricultural economy, featuring items supplied entirely by community producers:

  • Hamburgers: Winneshiek County Cattlemen's Association
  • BBQ Pulled Pork: Lynch BBQ / Lynch Livestock
  • Corn Chips: Iowa Corn Growers Association
  • Hard-Boiled Eggs: Iowa Egg Council
  • Cheese Sticks: Prairie Farms
  • Farm Fresh Milk: Country View Dairy (tended by the Fayette County Milk Producers)
  • Moo Mobile Shakes: Winneshiek County Dairy Promoters
  • Honey: Northeast Iowa Honey Producers Association
  • Apple Nachos: Iowa State University Extension Crop Cart (featuring fresh apples, granola, cinnamon and honey)

For Uhlenhake, seeing community connections spark over a shared plate of local food is exactly what the partnership between NICC and the Dairy Center is all about.

"An event like Grill and Chill on the Farm encompasses more than just a meal," Uhlenhake says. "It's a way to engage with the community, elevate local resources and opportunities and enlighten young minds to know where their food comes from and where they can go to learn more."

Supporting the Future of Agriculture

The success of the picnic highlights the broader, ongoing mission shared by NICC and Iowa's Dairy Center to support all aspects of agriculture in the region.

"Events like this truly enable the Iowa Dairy Center to engage with a wide audience to strengthen and support a strong agricultural community," said Uhlenhake.

Pulling off a community celebration of this scale required massive teamwork. The event was made possible in part by a $3,000 Undeniably Dairy Grant received from Midwest Dairy, which organizers noted was instrumental in supporting the evening's activities and farm-to-table experiences.

In addition to the grant, organizers extended their deep appreciation to the dozens of sponsors, partners and volunteers who contributed before, during and after the picnic. The evening's positive reception was perhaps best captured by a local veterinarian who caught up with Lawstuen as the crowds began to wind down.

"You really know how to throw a party," he told him.

For the families and neighbors who made the trip out to the Calmar campus, the evening offered a great community outing, excellent local food and a meaningful look at the farm operations that power the region.
