Lowenstein Advises Authors First on $10M Seed Financing

Lowenstein Sandler represented Authors First in connection with its $10 million seed financing, supporting the launch of a new studio that aims to give authors greater creative control when adapting their works for the screen.

Founded by private equity veteran Robert Hamwee, Authors First combines artificial intelligence tools with other production technologies to create screen adaptations of science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction and other works that have traditionally presented significant budgetary and logistical challenges.

"As a lifelong fan of historical fiction, science fiction and fantasy epics, I've always believed the definitive version of any story is in the author's imagination," Hamwee says. "We built Authors First to give them full creative control and modern tools so production budgets no longer dictate what's possible on screen."

The studio's first project is Genghis: Birth of an Empire, an adaptation of British author Conn Iggulden's 2007 novel Wolf of the Plains. The production uses AI and visual effects technology alongside the work of a team of approximately 25 people responsible for elements including the story, camera angles and character dialogue.

"We were pleased to advise Authors First on its seed financing as the company brings a new model for literary adaptation to market," says David L. Goret, partner in the firm's Corporate practice. "Authors First is exploring how emerging technologies can expand creative possibilities while helping authors preserve their vision throughout the adaptation process."

In addition to Goret, the Lowenstein team advising Authors First on its seed financing included Alex D. Leibowitz, Lauren N. Russell, Meera Patel and Antonia E. Spano.
