Army Veteran and Retired Colonel John D. Morgen Appointed to Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs

March 9, 2026 - Madison, WI

MADISON-Retired Colonel, and current social studies teacher for Neenah High School, John D. Morgen was appointed to the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs, a nine-member, part-time citizen advisory board to the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. The board has one representative from each of the state's eight congressional districts and one at-large member. Morgen serves as the District 6 member.

"I am excited to have John Morgen as a member of the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs," said Secretary James Bond. "In the short time since he joined BOVA late last year, he has already made a mark, demonstrating his deep regard and commitment for veterans across the state."

John served in the Wisconsin Army National Guard for 30 years from 1992-2022. During his military career, he held various leadership positions, including command at the Company, Battalion, and Brigade levels. He served with distinction in six overseas exercises in Asia and three lengthy deployments, to include Operation Iraqi Freedom (2007-2008), Operation Spartan Shield (Southwest Asia, 2018-2019), as well as in local communities throughout Wisconsin by leading the Wisconsin National Guard's operational response to the COVID-19 Pandemic as the 64th Joint Task Force Commander (2020-2021).

"I am honored and humbled to join BOVA and do what I can to help my fellow veterans," said Morgen. "My military service has shaped who I am today, and now as a veteran I hope I can be a voice on behalf of our shared veteran community in the Badger State."

Morgen holds multiple masters' degrees, is a former small business owner, author on at-risk youth, as well as an adjunct professor at St. Norbert College and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. He is also an award-winning teacher and cross-country and track coach at Neenah High School. John grew up on a small farm in Calumet County and currently lives in the Oshkosh area with his wife and three sons. He officially joined the Wisconsin Board of Affairs in August 2025.
