Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder and a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behavior, robbing individuals of their memories and leading to worsening mental and physical impairments; and

WHEREAS, in Virginia, approximately 164,000 people 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's disease; and

WHEREAS, there are over 333,000 dedicated Virginia caregivers who provide unpaid care at home valued at $12.8 billion; and

WHEREAS, researchers are working to stop, slow, and prevent Alzheimer's disease, and increased research, education, and community support services are needed to find more effective treatments and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is committed to raising awareness about the early warning signs of Alzheimer's and dementia, promoting brain health and risk reduction, and helping families affected by dementia to navigate the available resources and support;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize June 2026, as ALZHEIMER'S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
