Fairmont State University's 2025-26 Presidential Speaker Series is now underway, continuing its mission to bring distinguished leaders to campus to explore topics shaping today's world, including politics, economics, civics, the arts and culture. Since its launch last fall, the series has sparked meaningful dialogue and fostered intellectual engagement throughout the Falcon community.
The 2025-26 season began Oct. 2 with Dr. Charles "Chuck" Welch, president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). Speaking to a packed audience, Welch discussed the vital role regional public universities play in supporting student success, driving workforce development, and strengthening communities.
His presentation, "The Future of Regional Public Universities," provided valuable insights into the changing landscape of higher education and underscored the importance of institutions like Fairmont State in meeting the needs of students, employers, and communities alike.
"I think this is a time for regional public universities to really tell our story about who we are, conversely, who we aren't," Welch said. "Talk about that value students are getting, the return that they are going to have, the difference it will make in their lives, the types of things they are able to do and are currently doing."
The next event in the series, Keeping Graduates in West Virginia, will feature Morgan K. O'Brien, chief executive officer of Hope Gas, at 6 p.m. Nov. 13, 2025, in the Falcon Center Conference Rooms.
A seasoned business leader and Pittsburgh native, O'Brien brings decades of experience in utility management and community partnership. Known for his commitment to employee engagement and economic development, he will share his perspective on workforce retention and the importance of cultivating opportunities that encourage graduates to build their futures in West Virginia.
"Fairmont State is deeply committed to preparing graduates who not only succeed in their careers but also strengthen the communities they call home," said Fairmont State University President Mike Davis. "We're honored to invite Morgan O'Brien to campus, so he can share his vision of how businesses and universities can work together to keep our most talented graduates here in West Virginia, building a stronger future for our state."
