Ascension Alexian Brothers expands access to cardiovascular care with new clinicians

Ascension Alexian Brothers is expanding its cardiovascular service line by adding three new clinicians to its team in Elk Grove Village and Hoffman Estates. These clinicians include cardiologist Dr. Kifah Hussain, cardiac electrophysiologist Dr. Mohammed Premjee, and interventional cardiologist Dr. Luis Diaz Quintero. All three clinicians address different aspects of cardiovascular care, supporting the center of excellence Ascension Alexian Brothers is establishing for residents in the northwest suburbs who need heart healthcare.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, heart disease is the single leading cause of death in Illinois. When compared to national averages, Illinois has a higher prevalence for risk factors such as high cholesterol, obesity, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol use. These factors highlight why investments in cardiovascular care remain a priority for leadership at Ascension Alexian Brothers.

"It was made clear to me that Ascension Alexian Brothers wants to do everything possible to continuously expand the cardiovascular services offered in order to meet the growing need for those services, and that was a large component in my decision to join this team," said Dr. Diaz Quintero. "The work my colleagues and I do is vital to these communities, and it is rewarding to join a facility that prioritizes our specialty."

Over the past year, Ascension Alexian Brothers has earned multiple recognitions for its cardiovascular care. This includes a Gold Plus recognition through the American Heart Association's "Get With The Guidelines" program, a silver-level recognition for its atrial fibrillation care, and an Honor Roll distinction for aortic stenosis, a condition involving the narrowing of a valve in the heart. The hospital also earned two surgical recognitions from Castle Connolly, including a national recognition in coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

In addition to growing the cardiovascular service line at Ascension Alexian Brothers, Ascension Illinois has made investments this year to expand primary care access for families, adults, and children across its sites in Chicago's northwest suburbs. In all, the health system plans to add 14 primary care clinicians in 2026 at sites in Palatine, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Bartlett, and Elgin, alongside these three cardiovascular specialists.
