Donald Trump is gutting the job market as Americans are struggling to keep up with even higher prices. New data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas shows U.S.-based employers announced 83,387 job cuts in April - a 38% jump from March. Trump has now presided over the worst three Aprils for job cuts since 2009.
So far this year, employers have announced 300,749 job cuts, while hiring plans are collapsing - down 69% from March and 38% from April 2025.
The report makes clear that Trump's reckless tariffs and now his unpopular war of choice with Iran have shaken the manufacturing sector. Through April, industrial goods manufacturers announced 7,799 job cuts, up 71% from the same period in 2025.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"Donald Trump and JD Vance have completely wrecked the job market with their reckless trade war and now their deadly and costly war with Iran. Everyday Americans are getting laid off at a breakneck pace, while prices continue to climb, and working families are being forced to make impossible decisions about whether to buy groceries, pay rent, or afford lifesaving medicine. Meanwhile, Trump continues to put his own interests first while Americans struggle to find and keep good-paying jobs. Trump and Vance's economy doesn't work for everyday Americans - it only works for the wealthy and well-connected."
Trump's administration officials repeatedly claimed that the beginning of this year would be the "best quarter" for job creation. In August, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed that by the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first two quarters of this year, there would be "substantial job creation and expansion." Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick similarly claimed in September that "the Donald Trump economy is coming in the beginning of next year."
It's no wonder Trump's approval on the economy is at historic lows. Even before Trump started his war with Iran, 72% of workers said now is a "bad time" to find a quality job, compared to 2022, when nearly 70% of workers were optimistic. Nearly 70% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of the cost of living, including more than 40% of Republicans. More than 60% of Americans say the economy is on the wrong track, up nearly 20 points from the beginning of Trump's term.
