Lily Barkau Awarded Prestigious PCOR Pioneer Award for Leadership in Carbon Capture and Storage

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) Water Quality Division (WQD) is pleased to announce that Lily Barkau, Groundwater Section Manager, has been named the 2025 recipient of the esteemed PCOR Pioneer Award for her groundbreaking work in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

The Pioneer Award is presented annually to individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment, leadership, and impact in advancing CCS innovations, recognizing Barkau for her technical expertise and visionary efforts in the field.

"Lily's dedication and expertise have been instrumental in advancing CCS in Wyoming while also ensuring that Wyoming's water quality is protected. This award is a testament to her leadership and the positive impact she has made within our division and beyond," said Jennifer Zygmunt, WQD Administrator.

With over 30 years of experience in environmental science, engineering, and geology, Barkau has led multiple initiatives that have significantly advanced CCS for Wyoming. Her knowledge has shaped critical policy and fostered essential collaboration with all stakeholders, including local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as industry partners.

"This honor was truly a surprise but greatly appreciated. This achievement is only possible due to working with an amazing team in the Groundwater Section and the opportunities that DEQ has provided for me to be part of," said Barkau.
