SAN FRANCISCO - April 28, 2026 - The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) today announced the launch of the SFO Gate Explorer program, which allows visitors to go beyond security without booking a flight.
"We are very excited to launch the SFO Gate Explorer program," said Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet. "Airports are about bringing people together, and this program creates so many new ways for friends and family to connect, whether on arrival, departure, or even a long layover. This also allows a new audience to enjoy all the shopping, dining, artwork, museum exhibitions and amenities that make SFO so special. My thanks go out to the entire team that made this program a reality."
To apply for an SFO Gate Explorer Pass, please visit the Gate Explorer page to complete an application. Applications can be submitted up to 30 days in advance. Same-day applications are permitted. The application requires first and last name (as it appears on your TSA-approved REAL ID or passport), date of birth, gender, and e-mail address. Applications will be vetted in compliance with TSA requirements to determine approval status. Applicants will receive an e-mail after 12:00 midnight on the day of the visit with the approval status.
On the day of your approved visit, arrive at your selected security checkpoint. SFO Gate Explorer Pass is accepted in the standard screening lane at every security checkpoint.
Be sure to have your approved SFO Gate Explorer Pass and a Real ID or passport to be permitted through security. The SFO Gate Explorer Pass can be digital or paper and cannot be altered in any way.
SFO Gate Explorer Pass program participants are subject to the same security regulations and processes as ticketed passengers, including security wait times. Please review all security reminders to ensure your access to the Airport terminals will be granted.
The Airport reserves the right to refuse access to SFO Gate Explorer Pass holders or redirect them to alternative checkpoints to accommodate high passenger volumes or for safety and security concerns.
The number of passes granted per day is limited to avoid impacting wait times for traveling passengers at security checkpoints.
