A Story from a Teichert Foundation Grant Recipient

The Latino Center of Art and Culture is proud to present Oaxaca en Sacramento: Honrando Los Lunes del Cerro. The event honors the original Guelaguetza, a Mexican cultural tradition more than 500 years old. This celebration brings together eight distinct indigenous regions of Oaxaca, showcasing their unique dances, cuisines, and gifts.

This one-day event brings multigenerational families and communities throughout Northern California together to celebrate and preserve this indigenous tradition. Grounded in acceptance, tolerance, and respect for racial and cultural diversity, this traditional celebration allows immigrant families the opportunity to connect with their roots away from home.

In addition to its cultural significance, Oaxaca en Sacramento bolsters the economy through cultural tourism and local spending. Our vendor program also supports local and regional entrepreneurs, artisans, and food vendors, providing a platform for them to showcase and sell their artwork and products.

The cultural program draws heavily on our network of artists, many of whom are immigrants with exceptional talent, but face barriers sharing their craft at other local organizations due to limited bilingual support. By offering these artists a space to shine, the event fosters greater inclusivity and representation within the arts community.

Oaxaca en Sacramento is expected to attract more than 1,500 attendees this August and deliver several key benefits to the community:
