Marion County Commission Proclaims November as Lunch Cancer Awareness Month

During their regular meeting on Nov. 4, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, recognizing the ongoing efforts of local healthcare providers and community partners to promote early detection, prevention, and education.

Lung cancer remains the second-most common cancer among both men and women in the United States and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths nationwide. In 2022 alone, lung cancer claimed the lives of 311 Marion County residents, with local incidence and mortality rates consistently higher than the state average.

Early detection remains one of the most effective tools in saving lives. The low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan is currently the only recommended screening test for lung cancer and has been shown to reduce mortality among high-risk individuals by up to 20 percent, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. LDCT screening is also covered by Medicare.

Marion County residents have access to high-quality LDCT screenings through facilities such as HCA Florida Ocala Imaging Center and Radiology Associates of Ocala, which are committed to providing safe, evidence-based screening care to the community.

Although Florida's screening usage rate currently stands at just 2.4 percent, which is below the national average, county officials and community organizations continue working to increase awareness and participation. Raising awareness about prevention and early detection can have a lasting impact on saving lives.

Local partners including the Cancer Alliance of Marion County, American Cancer Society, Marion County Medical Society, Robert Boissoneault Oncology Institute, HUGs, HCA Florida Ocala, AdventHealth Ocala, Radiology Associates of Ocala, Florida Department of Health in Marion County, Tobacco Free Partnership of Marion County, Empath Hospice of Marion County, Heart of Florida Health Centers, and Langley Health Services continue to lead local efforts in education, advocacy, and access to care.

"Lung cancer takes more lives each year than any other cancer, yet it's also one where awareness and early detection can make a real difference," said Commission Chairman Kathy Bryant. "By encouraging screening and sharing vital information, we can help families in our community prevent tragedy and support those who are fighting this disease."

By proclaiming November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners reaffirms its commitment to supporting local healthcare initiatives that advance early detection, prevention, and improved community health.
