Last night's elections sent a loud message to Republicans: Voters are sick and tired of being sold out so that Donald Trump and his billionaire donors can make an extra buck - but this morning, Republicans are burying their heads in the sand.
Speaker Mike Johnson proclaimed, "I don't think the loss last night was any reflection about Republicans at all." In reality, more than half of the electorate in Virginia, New Jersey and California saw their vote as sending a message to Trump. In exit polls, a majority of voters in Virginia said they disapproved of Trump, and 6 in 10 voters said that Trump's federal government cuts affected their families' finances.
Even Trump agrees that Republicans are to blame for their election losses, saying, "The shutdown was a big factor, negative for the Republicans."
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"If Mike Johnson really thinks that last night's elections had nothing to do with Republicans, he's delusional. The reason Democrats won handily up and down the ballot is staring him right in the face: As Americans worry about how to put food on the table, they turn on the TV and see Donald Trump demolishing the East Wing for his $350 million gilded ballroom and bailing out foreign countries to the tune of billions of dollars. Meanwhile, Democrats put up strong candidates who have a relentless focus on what matters most to people: affordability. Even Trump knows that last night spells trouble for Republicans."
