Matthew D. Moore, associate professor in the Department of Food Science of the College of Natural Sciences, was recently elected president-elect of Phi Tau Sigma, the preeminent honor society for food scientists.

Phi Tau Sigma hosts various professional development and networking activities for members, including seminars and other programs. In addition, the society offers a number of scholarships and awards for the senior undergraduate students and later-stage professionals that make up its membership.

"Phi Tau Sigma is an exclusive honor society for food scientists and membership in it is a sign of academic and scientific excellence," explains Moore. "It is a great honor to be elected to serve as president-elect."

In addition to being elected president-elect, which will be followed by a term as president, Moore has been recognized as a lifetime member of Phi Tau Sigma.

Phi Tau Sigma Honorary Society, Inc. was established at UMass Amherst in 1953, and Moore recognizes the significance of a current member of UMass's Food Science department leading the society for the coming year.

"I was fortunate to be admitted into Phi Tau Sigma as an undergraduate food science student in 2009, and I take pride in having been a member ever since," Moore says. "In addition to the honor and prestige of being a member of Phi Tau Sigma, it has offered and continues to offer many opportunities for professional development that I have found quite valuable."
