Governor Polis Highlights Looming Expiration of Federal Health Care Tax Credits

Governor Also Visits Stephen Hart Award Winner Driving Economic Investment Through Historic Preservation in Southern Colorado

SOUTHERN COLORADO - Today, Governor Polis gathered small business owners, insurance experts, and health care leaders to highlight the urgency for Congress to renew the Enhanced Premium Tax Credits which, if Congress fails to renew by September 30th, will cause devastating premium hikes across the board for all Americans.

While in Southern Colorado Governor Polis also visited the Orman Mansion in Pueblo, the historic home of James B. Orman, Colorado's 12th Governor. The Manitou Red Sandstone home was built in 1890 and served as the Governor's Residence during Governor Orman's term from 1901-1903.

"I was excited to visit the Orman Mansion, the historic home of Governor Orman to learn about the history of the mansion and its role in Southern Colorado. Every corner of Colorado has a unique story and as we approach our historic sesquicentennial, or our 150th birthday, it's the perfect time to get out and brush up on Colorado history," said Governor Polis.

Governor Polis then visited and celebrated Walsenburg Mercantile, a 2026 Stephen Hart Award winner. This conversion activated the vacant building into seven long-term housing units, eight short-term housing units, and a vendor space for 80 local vendors. Walsenburg Mercantile is one of five renovations being honored with the Governor's Choice 2026 Stephen Hard Award. This building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

"The Stephen Hart Award was created to push Colorado innovators to preserve Colorado's bold architectural history, while spurring investment, economic activity, and addressing the unique needs of our communities. The Walsenburg Mercantile does exactly that. This conversion energized a vacant building creating 15 new homes for Colorado families and a gathering space for the community that will bring together businesses, visitors, and families, strengthening the local economy. Congratulations to Walsenburg Mercantile on its well deserved selection as a 2026 Stephen Hart Award Winner," said Governor Polis.
