Trump and Bondi Try To Extort Minnesota for State Voter Rolls in Wake of Alex Pretti Murder Arrow

US Attorney General Pam Bondi sends Minnesota Governor Tim Walz a letter demanding access to Minnesota's unredacted voter file in the wake of a murder at the hands of a federal immigration agent

DNC is fighting in court to stop Trump's federal takeover of elections and to protect voter privacy

Following the murder of Alex Pretti, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi sent Minnesota Governor Tim Walz a letter last night attempting to extort voter rolls from the state in the wake of Pretti's murder.

For months, Donald Trump and Pam Bondi have attempted to force states like Minnesota to hand over their voter files so that the Trump administration can create a national database with sensitive personal information like driver's license numbers, Social Security numbers, and party affiliation. This database would provide Trump with a directory for his ongoing campaign of political retribution and pose a serious threat to Americans' privacy from an administration that has repeatedly mishandled Americans' sensitive personal information. Ultimately, Trump is desperately searching for reasons to challenge election results and undermine democracy.

The DNC is already fighting in court to protect voter privacy and prevent the Trump administration from violating states' right to run their elections. As part of that effort, the DNC has filed amicus briefs in five states fighting back against the DOJ's unlawful attempt to seize state voter rolls, with more to come this week. Earlier this month, the DNC also sent warning letters to 10 states urging them not to enter into agreements to send their unredacted voter files to the DOJ and purge eligible voters from the rolls in violation of federal law.

Trump's DOJ already lost its first attempt to obtain an unredacted voter file in California, and a federal court in Oregon has signaled that the DOJ's attempt there will soon be denied. The DNC filed amicus briefs in both states.

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

"Last night, following the heinous murder of U.S. citizen Alex Pretti at the hands of a federal immigration agent, Pam Bondi drafted and sent a threatening letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz attempting to extort the state into handing over its voter rolls as part of an ongoing campaign to undermine local elections and build a national database for Trump's political revenge and retribution.

"The Trump administration thinks it can threaten and intimidate through violence and coercion, but they're wrong. The DNC will stand with local elected officials and fight like hell, including in the courts, to protect our democracy and the rights of voters in Minnesota and across the country.

"For Donald Trump, Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem, and Greg Bovino, we have one message for you: Get ICE the hell out of Minnesota. Now."
