Racial gaps persist in breast cancer survival rates

The AHS Index is a new way to look at data that illuminates a snapshot of our world today. It is intended to highlight health inequities and spark conversation, debate, and wonder.

Percent of women who will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives: 13%

Percent of white women with breast cancer who are still alive five years after their diagnosis: 92%

  • Of Asian Pacific Islander women: 92%
  • Of American Indian/Alaska Native women: 90%
  • Of Hispanic women: 88%
  • Of Black women: 83%

Year that AHS patients and community members formed the Black Patient Care Initiative to create a campaign designed to inspire more Black patients to be screened for breast cancer at the public health care system: 2024
